Vasectomy in Istanbul

A permanent method of male contraception, carried out after a private consultation to make sure it is the right decision for you.

Procedure time: 20-30 minutes Anaesthesia: Local Hospital stay: None

Short answer

A vasectomy is a minor procedure that cuts and seals the tubes carrying sperm (the vas deferens) to provide permanent male contraception. It takes about 20-30 minutes under local anaesthesia, and most men return to desk work within 1-2 days. It is not effective straight away, so other contraception is needed until a semen test, usually about 12 weeks later, confirms no sperm are present.

What is a vasectomy?

A vasectomy blocks the two tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. Semen is still produced and looks the same, but it no longer contains sperm. Hormone levels, erections, sex drive and orgasm are not affected.

It is one of the most effective forms of contraception and is intended to be permanent.

Who is it for?

Vasectomy suits men who are certain they do not want children in the future. Your doctor discusses your decision privately, including your circumstances and alternatives, before the procedure. A doctor assesses suitability in person with a short examination.

How the procedure is done

After local anaesthetic, the surgeon reaches each tube through a tiny opening or small incision in the scrotum, often using a no-scalpel technique. Each tube is divided and sealed, and the opening heals with little or no stitching. You rest briefly and then return to the hotel.

Your hotel, VIP transfers and a medical interpreter are arranged before you land, and a personal coordinator stays with you discreetly throughout.

Recovery and results

Mild aching, swelling or bruising is common for a few days. Supportive underwear, rest and simple pain relief help. Most men return to desk work in 1-2 days and avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for about a week.

Sperm remain in the tubes for some weeks, so you must use other contraception until a semen test, usually about 12 weeks after the procedure, shows no sperm. This test can be done in your home country and reviewed by the team. Metropolmed's own medical team performs the treatment in Istanbul, and 12 months of follow-up are included.

Your private consultation

Your consultation is private and gives you space to confirm that this is the right choice. Before you travel, your coordinator asks about your general health, medicines that thin the blood and any previous scrotal surgery. Some men discuss the decision with a partner beforehand, and they are welcome at the consultation. On the day, wear close-fitting supportive underwear, shower beforehand, and plan for a quiet first evening at your hotel.

Consultations take place one to one in a private room, with a medical interpreter if you need one, and you can ask for a male or female interpreter and coordinator. Your records, photographs and test results are kept strictly confidential and shared only with the clinicians treating you. Metropolmed holds the Turkish Ministry of Health international patient authorisation (USHAŞ AK-0164), and its own TÜRSAB-licensed travel division (licence 13032) books your hotel.

Risks and safety

Possible risks include bruising, a collection of blood (haematoma), infection, and a small lump where the tube was sealed. A small number of men develop long-term testicular discomfort. Rarely, the tubes rejoin, early or even years later, which could lead to pregnancy.

Vasectomy should be considered permanent. Reversal surgery exists but is not always successful. A doctor examines you in person and explains these points before you consent.

Recovery timeline

  1. Day 1Consultation and 20-30 minute procedure
  2. Day 2-3Rest; check-up before flying home
  3. Week 1Normal exercise usually resumes
  4. Week 12Semen test to confirm no sperm
  5. After clear testOther contraception can stop

Frequently asked questions

Does a vasectomy affect sex drive or erections?

No. Hormone production, erections, sensation and orgasm are unchanged, and semen looks much the same.

Is a vasectomy painful?

Most men feel only the brief sting of the local anaesthetic and some pressure during the procedure, followed by a mild ache for a few days.

Can a vasectomy be reversed?

Reversal is possible but involves more complex surgery and is not always successful, so a vasectomy should be considered permanent.

Can I do the follow-up semen test at home?

Yes. You can have the test with a local laboratory and share the result with your coordinator for review.
