Short answer
Zirconium crowns are full-coverage dental crowns made on a zirconia base, usually layered with ceramic for a natural look. They are strong, metal-free and suitable for front and back teeth. Treatment usually takes 5 to 7 days in Istanbul under local anaesthesia, and most patients return to normal routines the next day.
What are zirconium crowns?
A zirconium crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. The inner core is made from zirconia, a very strong ceramic, and the outer layer is usually porcelain shaded to match your other teeth.
Because there is no metal, there is no grey line at the gum and the crowns are well tolerated by the body. Their strength makes them a good choice for molars and for full-arch smile makeovers.
Who is it for?
Zirconium crowns suit people whose teeth need both protection and a better appearance. A dentist decides in person whether a crown is the right option.
- Teeth with large fillings or cracks
- Teeth after root canal treatment
- Badly worn or broken teeth
- Replacing old metal-based crowns
- Patients who grind or bite heavily
How the procedure is done
Treatment usually takes 5 to 7 days in Istanbul. It begins with an examination, a panoramic X-ray and, for cosmetic cases, Digital Smile Design.
Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is reshaped all the way round so the crown can fit over it. Digital scans or impressions are sent to the laboratory, where the zirconia is milled and layered. You wear temporary crowns in the meantime. The final crowns are tried in, the bite is checked, and they are cemented in place.
Metropolmed's own dental team carries out your treatment in Istanbul. Our TÜRSAB-licensed travel division (licence 13032) books your hotel, and your hotel, VIP transfer and medical interpreter are arranged before you land. A personal coordinator and 12 months of follow-up are included.
Recovery and results
Most people return to normal routines the next day. Gums may feel tender and teeth may be sensitive for a week or two. With good oral hygiene, zirconium crowns typically last 10 to 15 years and often longer.
Before you fly home, your dentist checks your bite and the fit at the gum line. Your coordinator stays in touch for 12 months, and routine check-ups can be done by your local dentist.
Caring for zirconium crowns
Zirconium crowns do not decay, but the tooth underneath and the gum around it still need daily care. Good habits protect the edge where the crown meets the tooth, which is the area most at risk.
- Brush twice a day and clean between teeth daily
- Use interdental brushes or a water flosser around crown edges
- Wear a night guard if you grind
- Avoid opening packets or bottles with your teeth
- Have a check-up and professional clean every six months
Risks and safety
Crowns need more tooth reduction than veneers, which can occasionally irritate the nerve and lead to root canal treatment. Other possible issues include sensitivity, gum recession around the crown over time and, rarely, chipping of the outer porcelain layer.
Tooth preparation is permanent. A dentist assesses suitability in person and explains whether a crown or a more conservative option fits your case. Metropolmed holds the Turkish Ministry of Health international patient authorisation (USHAŞ AK-0164).

Frequently asked questions
Are zirconium crowns suitable for back teeth?
Yes, zirconia is very strong and handles the chewing forces on molars well. This is one of its main advantages over glass-ceramics.
What is the difference between zirconium and E-max?
Zirconium is stronger, while E-max is more translucent. Many plans use E-max on front teeth and zirconium on back teeth.
Will my zirconium crowns look natural?
Yes, the outer porcelain layer is shaded to match your planned smile, and there is no metal to show at the gum line.
Can zirconium crowns be whitened later?
No, crowns do not respond to whitening. If you want lighter natural teeth, whiten them before your crowns are shade-matched.
