Short answer
A hair transplant moves your own permanent follicles from the back of the head to thinning areas. At Metropolmed it takes one day in clinic and three days in Istanbul. Most people return to desk work within a week, new hair starts growing at 3–4 months, and the final result shows at 12–18 months.

Hair transplant basics
The essentials, in plain language.
What is a hair transplant?
A hair transplant moves your own permanent hair follicles from the donor area at the back and sides of the head to thinning or bald areas. Because donor follicles are genetically resistant to the hormone that causes pattern hair loss, transplanted hair keeps growing for life.
Am I a good candidate for a hair transplant?
You are usually a good candidate if your hair loss has started to stabilise, your donor area is dense enough and you are in good general health. Our doctors check your donor density, hair calibre and loss pattern from your photos first, and confirm everything in person before the procedure.
Is a hair transplant permanent?
Yes, the transplanted hair is permanent. Your existing native hair can still thin over time, so your doctor may recommend PRP or medical treatment to protect it.
How long does the procedure take?
Most procedures take 6 to 8 hours and are completed in a single day, with breaks for rest and lunch. Very high graft counts can take longer.
Will I have visible scars?
No linear scar. FUE and DHI leave tiny dot-like marks in the donor area that heal within days and are not visible once the hair grows back, even with a short haircut.
What's in the package
What is included in a hair transplant package?
Every hair transplant package includes:
- Your procedure by an expert doctor
- Pre-operative blood tests
- Needle-free local anaesthesia or sedation (by package)
- PRP treatment and laser hair therapy
- Hair growth serum and an aftercare kit
- Hotel stay and VIP transfers between airport, hotel and clinic
- An interpreter
- One year of follow-up and a quality guarantee
What is the difference between Campaign, Premium and Elite?
Campaign uses needle-free local anaesthesia, a 4-star hotel and a 1-month care kit. Premium adds sedation and a 3-month care kit. Elite adds a 5-star hotel, a 6-month care kit and stem cell / exosome therapy.
Are flights included?
Flights are not part of the standard package because departure cities differ, but our team can find and book suitable flights for you.
Can someone come with me?
Yes, a companion is welcome to stay with you at the hotel and join the transfers. Ask your coordinator to add them to your booking.
Are there any hidden costs?
No. Your written quote lists everything included before you book, so the price you agree is the price you pay.
Tests & blood work
Are blood tests done before a hair transplant?
Yes. Blood is taken at the clinic before your procedure and the tests are included in your package. They typically cover a complete blood count, clotting values, blood sugar, and hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV screening.
What happens if a test result is abnormal?
The doctor reviews it with you. Some results only need extra precautions; others mean the procedure is postponed for your safety. You are never operated on without the doctor's approval.
Should I stop any medication before the procedure?
Tell us about every medication and supplement you take. Blood thinners, aspirin, some supplements, alcohol and smoking are usually paused for a period before surgery, but only change prescribed medication with your doctor's agreement.
How long to stay in Istanbul
How many days do I need to stay in Istanbul for a hair transplant?
Plan for 3 days. A typical schedule:
- Day 1: airport pick-up, hotel check-in, consultation, hairline design and blood tests
- Day 2: your procedure
- Day 3: check-up, first professional wash and aftercare instructions, then transfer to the airport
Some patients add a night to rest or see the city.
When can I fly home?
Usually the day after your procedure, once the first wash and check-up are done.
Do I need to arrange my own transport in Istanbul?
No. VIP transfers between the airport, your hotel and the clinic are arranged for you, and a coordinator stays in touch throughout your stay.
Recovery & back to normal
When can I return to normal life after a hair transplant?
Most people return to desk work and normal social life within 3 to 7 days. The small crusts fall off by around day 10. Physical jobs usually need about 10 to 14 days.
When can I exercise, swim or use a sauna?
Light walking straight away, light exercise after about one week, the gym after about two weeks. Avoid swimming, sauna, steam rooms and direct sun on the scalp for one month.
Is it normal for transplanted hair to fall out?
Yes. Between weeks 2 and 8 most transplanted hairs shed ("shock loss"). The follicles stay in place and start growing new hair from around month 3.
When will I see the final result?
New growth starts at 3 to 4 months, the change is clearly visible at 6 months, and the final result shows at 12 to 18 months as hair thickens.
When can I wear a hat?
A loose, clean hat after about 10 days, once the crusts have gone.
Grafts & planning
How do I know how many grafts I need?
Send us five photos (front, top, crown, both sides and the back). Our doctors assess your hair loss stage, donor density and hair thickness and send you a written plan with an estimated graft range. The final number is confirmed at your consultation in Istanbul.
What is the difference between a graft and a hair?
A graft is a natural follicular unit that holds 1 to 4 hairs, around 2 to 2.5 on average. So 3,000 grafts usually means roughly 6,000 to 7,500 hairs.
How many grafts for each stage of hair loss?
A rough guide on the Norwood scale: stage 2 about 1,500 to 2,000 grafts, stage 3 about 2,000 to 3,000, stage 4 about 3,000 to 4,000, stage 5 about 4,000 to 5,000. Stage 6 and above may need two sessions.
Is there a maximum number of grafts in one session?
The limit is your donor area, not a number on a price list. We only take what your donor can safely give so it still looks full afterwards.
