Short answer
Penile curvature treatment corrects a bend in the erect penis, most often caused by Peyronie's disease, in which scar tissue forms inside the penis. Early stages are usually managed without surgery, while stable curvature that makes intercourse difficult can be corrected with a 1-2 hour operation. Most men having surgery stay in Istanbul for about 7 days and avoid sexual activity for around 6 weeks.
What is penile curvature?
Some men are born with a curve, known as congenital curvature. More often, curvature develops in adulthood because of Peyronie's disease, where a firm plaque of scar tissue forms in the lining of the erectile tissue and pulls the penis to one side.
Peyronie's has an active phase, often with pain and a changing curve, followed by a stable phase when the curve stops changing.
Who is it for?
Treatment is for men whose curvature causes pain, makes intercourse difficult or causes distress. Surgery is usually considered only once the curve has been stable for at least 3-6 months. A doctor assesses suitability in person, often with photographs and an ultrasound.
How the condition is treated
In the active phase, your urologist may suggest oral treatment, injections into the plaque or a traction device. Shock wave therapy may ease pain. In the stable phase, surgery offers the most reliable correction.
Your hotel, VIP transfers and a medical interpreter are arranged before you land, and a personal coordinator stays with you discreetly throughout.
- Plication: stitches on the longer side to straighten the penis; suits milder curves
- Plaque incision or excision with grafting: for more severe curves, with a greater risk of erectile changes
- Penile prosthesis with straightening: for men who also have erectile dysfunction
Recovery and results
After surgery, swelling and bruising settle over 2-3 weeks. Most men return to desk work in about a week and resume sexual activity after around 6 weeks. Your surgeon may recommend gentle stretching or a traction device during healing.
Most men achieve a curve straight enough for comfortable intercourse, though a small residual curve can remain. Metropolmed's own medical team performs the treatment in Istanbul, and 12 months of follow-up are included.
Your private consultation
Your consultation is private, and the team understands that curvature can be difficult to talk about. Before you travel, it helps to note when the curve appeared, whether it has changed recently and whether erections are painful. With your consent, discreet photographs of the erect penis from above and the side, sent securely, help the surgeon judge the angle. Please also list any treatments you have already tried and their effect.
Consultations take place one to one in a private room, with a medical interpreter if you need one, and you can ask for a male or female interpreter and coordinator. Your records, photographs and test results are kept strictly confidential and shared only with the clinicians treating you. Metropolmed holds the Turkish Ministry of Health international patient authorisation (USHAŞ AK-0164), and its own TÜRSAB-licensed travel division (licence 13032) books your hotel.
Risks and safety
Plication commonly causes some loss of length. Other risks include recurrence of the curve, reduced sensation, new or worsened erectile difficulties (particularly with grafting), a palpable stitch, bleeding and infection.
Your urologist examines you in person, explains which option suits your curve and its specific trade-offs, and gives you time to decide.
Recovery timeline
- Day 1Surgery and return to the hotel or overnight stay
- Week 1Check-up before flying home
- Week 2-3Swelling and bruising settle
- Week 6Sexual activity usually resumes
- Month 3Final straightening assessed
Frequently asked questions
Does Peyronie's disease go away on its own?
Sometimes the pain settles, and a small number of men see some improvement, but in most the curve stays the same or worsens without treatment.
Why wait before surgery?
Operating during the active phase risks the curve changing again afterwards, so surgeons wait until it has been stable for several months.
Will surgery make my penis shorter?
Plication can reduce length slightly. Your surgeon explains the likely change for your curve before you decide.
Is a slight curve normal?
Yes. A mild curve that causes no pain or difficulty is common and usually needs no treatment.
