Short answer
Cheek aesthetics is surgery that adds volume or projection to the cheekbones using fat transfer or cheek implants. It usually takes 1-2 hours under general anaesthesia or sedation, often as a day case. Most patients stay in Istanbul for 5-7 days and return to work after 7-10 days.
What is cheek aesthetics?
Cheek aesthetics, also called cheek augmentation, enhances the shape of the cheekbones and midface. Flat cheeks, either from birth or from volume loss with age, can make the face look tired or less balanced.
There are two main surgical options. Fat transfer moves your own fat to the cheeks for a soft, natural fullness. Cheek implants give a more defined and permanent change in bone projection.
Who is it for?
Cheek aesthetics suits adults who feel their cheekbones are flat or who have lost midface volume. It is often combined with a face lift, chin aesthetics or rhinoplasty to balance the profile.
- Flat or underdeveloped cheekbones
- Hollow cheeks after weight loss
- Midface volume loss with age
- Wish for a more sculpted face
How the procedure is done
For fat transfer, a small amount of fat is taken by gentle liposuction, usually from the abdomen or thighs, then purified and injected in fine layers into the cheeks. No incisions are needed on the face.
For implants, the surgeon places a shaped implant over the cheekbone through an incision inside the mouth, so there is no visible scar. The implant is fixed in place to prevent movement.
Metropolmed's own surgical team performs the operation in Istanbul, and a personal coordinator stays with you from your first message to your 12-month follow-up. Your hotel, VIP transfers and a medical interpreter are arranged before you land in Istanbul.
Fat transfer or cheek implants?
Fat transfer is often chosen by patients who want soft, natural fullness and who also have a little fat to spare elsewhere. It adds volume and can improve skin quality, but some fat is absorbed and a top-up may be needed.
Cheek implants are chosen when the cheekbone itself is flat and a sharper, more defined projection is the goal. They give a predictable, permanent shape from the start. Some patients benefit from both, with an implant for structure and fat for softness. Your surgeon recommends the option after examining your face.
Recovery and results
Swelling in the cheeks is normal for 1-2 weeks and can make the result look larger at first. After implant surgery, you follow a soft diet and careful mouth hygiene for about a week.
Most patients return to work after 7-10 days. With fat transfer, some of the fat is naturally absorbed in the first 3 months, and what remains is long lasting. The final shape is usually clear after 3-6 months.
You can usually fly home after 5-7 days once the surgeon has checked healing. Sleeping on your back with your head raised for the first week helps the swelling settle evenly.
Risks and safety
Risks include swelling, bruising, asymmetry, infection and temporary numbness of the cheek or upper lip. Implants can very rarely shift or need removal. Fat transfer can give uneven absorption, which may need a small top-up.
A doctor assesses your facial proportions in person and recommends fat or implants based on your anatomy and goals.
Recovery timeline
- Day 1Return to hotel, cold compresses.
- Week 1Soft diet and mouth care after implants.
- Week 2Most bruising gone, back to work.
- Month 3Fat transfer has stabilised.
- Month 3-6Final cheek shape visible.
Frequently asked questions
Are cheek implants or fat transfer better?
Neither is better for everyone. Fat transfer gives soft, natural volume, while implants give stronger, more defined projection; your surgeon will recommend one after examining you.
Will I have scars after cheek surgery?
Usually not on the face. Implants are placed through the inside of the mouth, and fat is taken through tiny incisions elsewhere on the body.
Is cheek fat transfer permanent?
The fat that survives after about 3 months is generally permanent. Some patients need a small top-up session to fine-tune the result.
Can cheek aesthetics replace fillers?
Yes, for many people it is a longer-lasting alternative. Fillers wear off within months, while surgical results last far longer.
