Short answer
A Brazilian butt lift is surgery that removes fat by liposuction and reinjects it into the buttocks to add volume and improve shape. For safety, the fat should be placed only in the fat layer under the skin, above the gluteal muscle, by an experienced surgeon. It usually takes 2 to 4 hours under general anaesthesia with one night in hospital, and most patients stay in Istanbul for 7 to 10 days.
What is a Brazilian butt lift?
A Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, is a fat transfer procedure for the buttocks. Liposuction slims the waist, flanks or back, and the purified fat is used to add projection and curve to the buttocks.
The result combines a narrower waist with fuller hips and buttocks. It uses your own tissue, so no buttock implant is involved.
Who is it for?
It suits healthy adults at a stable weight with enough spare fat to harvest and realistic expectations about size. Very slim patients may not have enough fat.
- Flat or poorly projected buttocks
- Hip dips you would like softened
- Wish for a more defined waist-to-hip curve
- Non-smokers in good general health
How the procedure is done safely
Your surgeon examines you in person and plans both the liposuction and the shape you want. Fat is harvested, cleaned and injected with a blunt cannula in many small amounts.
The key safety rule is that fat goes only into the subcutaneous layer, above the gluteal muscle, never into or beneath it. Large veins lie deep within and under the muscle, and keeping the cannula above the muscle greatly reduces the chance of fat entering them. Volumes are kept within safe limits rather than pushed for maximum size. Your hotel, VIP transfers and a medical interpreter are arranged before you land in Istanbul, and a personal coordinator stays with you throughout.
Recovery and results
To protect the new fat, you should avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for about 2 to 3 weeks and sleep on your front or side. A special cushion lets you sit when needed. Compression is worn for about 6 weeks.
Desk work is usually possible after 2 to 3 weeks. Part of the fat is reabsorbed over the first months, and the shape is stable at around 6 months.
Preparing for your BBL
Good preparation supports both safety and the final shape. You should be at a stable weight, as significant weight change after surgery affects the transferred fat.
Stop smoking and nicotine well before surgery, and follow your doctor's advice on medicines and supplements that affect bleeding. Plan for a special sitting cushion and loose clothing.
Risks and safety
BBL carries the general risks of liposuction and fat transfer: bruising, swelling, infection, fluid collection, uneven shape, lumps and loss of some fat. The most serious risk is fat embolism, where fat enters a large blood vessel and travels to the lungs. It is rare, but it can be life threatening.
Fat embolism has been linked mainly to injecting fat into or under the muscle. This is why our surgeons place fat only above the muscle, use blunt cannulas and keep volumes moderate. Blood clots in the legs are also possible, so early walking and clot-prevention measures are used.
A doctor assesses your suitability in person, explains these risks clearly and answers your questions before you decide. Choosing an experienced surgeon who follows this technique is the most important safety step.
Recovery timeline
- Day 1Hospital night, walking, no direct sitting
- Week 1Check-ups, liposuction areas settling
- Week 2-3Sitting gradually allowed, back to desk work
- Week 6Compression stopped, exercise resumes
- Month 3-6Fat settles, stable final shape
Frequently asked questions
Is a Brazilian butt lift safe?
A BBL can be performed safely when the fat is placed only above the gluteal muscle by an experienced surgeon, with moderate volumes. Like all surgery it carries risks, including a rare but serious risk of fat embolism, which your doctor will explain.
Why is fat placed above the muscle?
Large blood vessels run deep in and beneath the gluteal muscle. Keeping fat in the layer above the muscle greatly reduces the chance of fat entering these vessels.
How long can I not sit after a BBL?
Most patients avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for about 2 to 3 weeks and use a special cushion when needed. Your surgeon will give you exact guidance.
How much fat survives after a BBL?
Some of the fat is reabsorbed in the first months, and the amount varies from person to person. The result is usually stable by around 6 months.
Can I fly home after a BBL?
Most patients fly home after 7 to 10 days, once cleared at the final check-up. You will be advised how to sit and move during the flight to protect the result and reduce clot risk.
