Short answer
A thigh lift is surgery that removes excess skin and fat from the inner or outer thighs and tightens the remaining skin. It usually takes 2 to 3 hours under general anaesthesia with 1 to 2 nights in hospital. Most patients stay in Istanbul for 7 to 10 days and return to desk work after 2 to 3 weeks.
What is a thigh lift?
A thigh lift is an operation that reshapes the thighs by removing loose skin and fat. The most common type treats the inner thigh, where skin often sags after weight loss.
Liposuction is usually included to remove fat before the skin is tightened. The trade-off is a scar, which is placed as discreetly as possible.
Who is it for?
It suits people at a stable weight with loose thigh skin that exercise cannot improve.
- Sagging inner thigh skin
- Chafing or skin irritation when walking
- Loose skin after major weight loss
- Patients willing to accept a scar
How the procedure is done
Your surgeon examines you in person and marks the skin to remove. For mild laxity, the incision is placed in the groin crease. For more loose skin, a vertical scar along the inner thigh is needed.
Excess skin and fat are removed and the deeper tissues are anchored to reduce scar pulling. Drains may be used for a short time. Your hotel, VIP transfers and a medical interpreter are arranged before you land in Istanbul, and a personal coordinator stays with you throughout.
Recovery and results
You wear compression garments for about 6 weeks. Walking starts on the first day, but stretching the legs wide and sitting for long periods are limited at first.
Most patients return to desk work after 2 to 3 weeks and to exercise after 6 weeks. Swelling can last several months and the scar fades over a year or more.
Good hygiene in the groin area is important while the wound heals, and your nurse will show you how to keep it clean and dry. Scar care with silicone and sun protection starts once the wounds have closed. Progress photos can be reviewed during the first year.
Inner, medial and outer thigh lifts
Different thigh lifts treat different patterns of loose skin. A medial or groin-crease lift treats mild laxity in the upper inner thigh, with a scar hidden in the groin fold.
A vertical inner thigh lift removes more skin along the length of the inner thigh, with a longer scar. An outer thigh lift, often combined with a lower body lift, treats loose skin over the hips and outer thighs after major weight loss.
Preparation includes a stable weight for at least 6 to 12 months, stopping smoking and blood tests before surgery. Loose skirts or shorts and a supportive cushion make the first weeks more comfortable.
- Groin-crease lift: mild upper inner thigh laxity
- Vertical inner thigh lift: more extensive loose skin
- Outer thigh lift: hips and outer thighs
Risks and safety
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, wound breakdown in the groin area, wide scars, numbness, swelling of the lower legs and blood clots.
Keeping the wound clean and following movement advice reduces problems. A doctor assesses your suitability in person and explains which incision you need.
Recovery timeline
- Day 1-2Hospital stay, early walking
- Week 1Drains removed, wound check
- Week 2Final check-up, cleared to fly
- Week 3Return to desk work
- Week 6Exercise resumes
- Month 6-12Swelling gone, scar fading
Frequently asked questions
Where are the thigh lift scars?
For a mild lift the scar sits in the groin crease. For more loose skin, a scar also runs down the inner thigh.
Is a thigh lift the same as liposuction of the thighs?
No, liposuction removes fat but not loose skin. A thigh lift removes skin and usually includes liposuction as well.
When can I sit normally after a thigh lift?
Short periods of sitting are fine early on. Long sitting and wide leg movements are limited for the first couple of weeks to protect the wound.
Why is a longer stay recommended?
It lets your surgeon check the wound before the flight and allows time for early walking, which helps reduce clot risk.
