Short answer
Teeth whitening is a non-invasive treatment that lightens the natural colour of the teeth using a professional bleaching gel. An in-clinic session usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes and needs no anaesthesia. You can return to normal activities straight away, though dark foods and drinks should be avoided for 48 hours.
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic treatment that lightens stains inside and on the surface of natural teeth. A dentist applies a professional whitening gel and activates it in the clinic under controlled conditions.
Unlike veneers or crowns, whitening does not change the shape of the teeth and does not remove any tooth structure. It only changes colour.
Who is it for?
Whitening works best for people with healthy teeth and gums whose teeth have yellowed with age or from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking. A dentist checks your teeth in person before treatment.
- Good candidates: natural teeth with surface or age-related staining
- Less suitable: grey staining from medication or trauma
- Not suitable: pregnancy, untreated decay or gum disease
- Fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour
How the procedure is done
The visit starts with an examination and a shade check so you can see the starting colour. The gums are protected with a barrier, then the whitening gel is applied to the front surfaces of the teeth.
The gel is left in place for short cycles and may be activated with a light. The whole session usually takes 60 to 90 minutes. Your dentist then checks the new shade and gives you aftercare advice.
Whitening is often combined with a trip for other dental treatment. Metropolmed's own dental team carries out your treatment in Istanbul. Our TÜRSAB-licensed travel division (licence 13032) books your hotel, and your hotel, VIP transfer and medical interpreter are arranged before you land. A personal coordinator and 12 months of follow-up are included.
Recovery and results
There is no recovery time and you can go back to your day straight away. Some people feel short-lived sensitivity or mild gum irritation for 24 to 48 hours.
For 48 hours avoid strongly coloured food and drink such as coffee, red wine and curry, and avoid smoking. Results typically last 1 to 3 years, depending on diet and habits.
Your coordinator can share simple aftercare notes in your language, so you know what to eat and avoid once you are home.
Keeping your teeth white for longer
Simple daily habits make the biggest difference to how long whitening lasts. Most patients keep a noticeably brighter shade for one to three years with good care.
- Rinse with water after coffee, tea or red wine
- Use a straw for dark drinks where practical
- Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste
- Avoid or cut down on smoking
- Have a professional clean every six months
- Ask your dentist before using home whitening products
Risks and safety
Professional whitening is considered safe when done by a dentist. The most common side effects are temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. Results vary from person to person and no exact shade can be promised.
Whitening is not done over untreated decay or gum disease, and a dentist assesses your suitability in person. Metropolmed holds the Turkish Ministry of Health international patient authorisation (USHAŞ AK-0164).
Recovery timeline

Frequently asked questions
Does teeth whitening damage enamel?
No, professional whitening under a dentist's care does not damage healthy enamel. Temporary sensitivity is the most common side effect.
Will whitening change the colour of my veneers or crowns?
No, whitening only works on natural teeth. If you plan veneers or crowns, whitening is often done first so the new teeth can be matched to the lighter shade.
How white will my teeth get?
Most people see a clear improvement, but the final shade depends on your natural tooth colour and the type of staining. Your dentist will give you a realistic expectation at the shade check.
Can I whiten my teeth during a short city break?
Yes, an in-clinic session takes about 60 to 90 minutes, so one or two days in Istanbul is usually enough.
