Short answer
A hair transplant with sedation combines local anaesthesia with a light, monitored sedation that leaves you deeply relaxed and drowsy, though not fully asleep. It is not general anaesthesia, an anaesthesiologist watches you throughout, and the effect wears off within a short time in the recovery area. You should not drive for the rest of that day.
What is sedation for a hair transplant?
Sedation is a lighter, monitored form of relaxation given together with local anaesthesia. You are in a deeply relaxed, drowsy state and can still respond if needed. It is not general anaesthesia, which is not used for hair transplants.
Most patients describe the procedure as very comfortable. Some may still feel brief pressure or mild discomfort, but awareness is greatly reduced.
Sedation can be used with Sapphire FUE, DHI, Hybrid and unshaven procedures. It is included in the Premium and Elite hair transplant packages.
Who is it for?
Sedation suits patients who want a calmer day, and a doctor confirms you are suitable after your health check.
- People who feel anxious about procedures
- Long or large sessions, such as Hybrid procedures
- Patients with a low tolerance for discomfort
- Anyone who wants the day to pass more easily
How the procedure is done
Before the procedure, your health, medication and blood tests are reviewed. An anaesthesiologist gives the sedation and monitors your breathing, heart rate and oxygen levels throughout, adjusting the level as needed. Local anaesthesia, delivered needle-free at the start, numbs the treated areas.
Most patients need 3 days in Istanbul. Your hotel, VIP transfers and a medical interpreter are arranged before you land, and a personal coordinator stays in touch from your first message to your 12-month check-up.
After the procedure
Sedation usually wears off within a short time in the recovery area. You should not drive or make important decisions for the rest of the day, and our driver takes you back to your hotel. Hair transplant recovery is otherwise the same as without sedation.
The next morning you return to the clinic for a check-up and your first professional wash, and most patients fly home that day. Follow-up continues after you fly home. You send progress photos to your coordinator at set points over the next 12 months, and the medical team reviews them and answers your questions.
Preparing for sedation
Sedation needs a little more preparation than local anaesthesia alone. You will be asked not to eat for a few hours before the procedure and to avoid alcohol the day before.
Tell us about every medication and supplement you take, and about any heart, lung or sleep conditions. Bring a list or photos of your medicine boxes to make this easy.
Plan to rest for the remainder of the day. Our driver takes you back to your hotel, and a companion is welcome to stay with you.
Risks and safety
Sedation is generally well tolerated. Drowsiness, mild nausea or a headache afterwards are possible and pass quickly. Serious reactions are rare and are the reason an anaesthesiologist monitors you throughout. Tell us about any heart, lung or sleep conditions, as a doctor assesses your suitability for sedation in person.
