Laser eye surgery in Istanbul

Laser vision correction reshapes the cornea to reduce or remove your need for glasses or contact lenses. Detailed eye tests come first, so the right method is chosen for your eyes.

Procedure time: 10-15 minutes, both eyes Anaesthesia: Numbing eye drops Hospital stay: None

Short answer

Laser eye surgery corrects short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea with a laser. Treatment usually takes 10-15 minutes for both eyes under numbing eye drops, and most patients stay in Istanbul for 3-4 days. Many people see clearly within a day or two, though vision can keep settling for up to three months.

What is laser eye surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a treatment that changes the shape of the cornea, the clear front window of the eye, so light focuses correctly on the retina. It can treat short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

There are several methods. In LASIK, a thin flap is created in the cornea before the laser reshapes the tissue beneath. In surface treatments such as PRK, the laser works on the outer surface. Lenticule-extraction techniques remove a small disc of tissue through a tiny opening. Your eye doctor recommends the method that suits your corneas and prescription.

Who is it for?

Laser eye surgery is usually suitable for adults aged 18 or over whose prescription has been stable for at least a year and whose corneas are thick and healthy enough. A detailed eye examination decides whether you are a good candidate.

A doctor assesses your suitability in person. Treatment may not be advised if you have thin or irregular corneas, keratoconus, severe dry eye, uncontrolled diabetes, certain autoimmune conditions, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. If laser is not right for you, lens-based options may be discussed.

  • Age 18 or over
  • Stable prescription for at least 12 months
  • Healthy corneas of adequate thickness

How the procedure is done

Before treatment you have a full set of eye tests, including corneal mapping and thickness measurements. Contact lens wearers are usually asked to stop wearing them for some days beforehand.

On the day, numbing drops are used and a small clip keeps your eyelids open. The laser itself usually works for less than a minute per eye, and the whole visit for both eyes is short. Your hotel, VIP transfer and medical interpreter are arranged before you land, and someone accompanies you back to the hotel afterwards.

Recovery and results

Most patients notice clearer vision within a day after LASIK or lenticule extraction, while surface treatments usually take several days longer. A check-up the next day confirms that healing has started well.

You use eye drops for a few weeks and avoid rubbing your eyes, swimming and eye make-up for a short period. Vision often fluctuates and continues to settle over one to three months. Laser surgery does not stop age-related changes, so reading glasses may still be needed later in life.

Risks and safety

Laser eye surgery is a common procedure, but it is still surgery and has risks. Dry eyes are the most frequent side effect and usually improve over months. Some people notice glare or halos around lights at night, under- or over-correction that may need further treatment, and, rarely, infection or flap problems.

Careful screening is the most important safety step, as it rules out eyes that are not suitable. Following your drop schedule and attending check-ups lowers the risk further. Metropolmed holds the Turkish Ministry of Health international patient authorisation (USHAŞ AK-0164).

Recovery timeline

  1. Day 1Eye tests, treatment and rest at the hotel.
  2. Day 2Check-up; most patients already see more clearly.
  3. Week 1Eye drops, no rubbing, no swimming; back to most routines.
  4. Month 1Vision improving; dryness usually easing.
  5. Month 3Vision typically stable; final check with your local optician.

Frequently asked questions

Does laser eye surgery hurt?

No, the treatment itself is not usually painful because numbing drops are used. You may feel pressure, and the eyes can feel gritty or watery for a few hours afterwards.

Can I fly home after laser eye surgery?

Yes, most patients can fly 1-2 days after treatment once the follow-up check is done. Use lubricating drops during the flight, as cabin air is dry.

Will I still need reading glasses?

You may, as laser surgery does not prevent the natural ageing of the lens that affects reading vision from the mid-40s. Some people over 45 may be better suited to lens surgery.

Are both eyes treated on the same day?

Yes, both eyes are usually treated in the same session. This keeps your trip short and your vision balanced.

When can I drive after laser eye surgery?

Most people can drive within a few days to a week, once their vision meets the legal standard. Your doctor confirms this at your check-up.
