Short answer

Breast reduction is surgery that removes excess breast tissue and skin to make the breasts smaller, lighter and higher on the chest. It usually takes 3 to 4 hours under general anaesthesia with one night in hospital. Most patients stay in Istanbul for 6 to 7 days and return to desk work in about 2 weeks.

What is breast reduction?

Breast reduction, also called reduction mammoplasty, reduces the size and weight of large breasts. The surgeon removes tissue and skin, reshapes what remains and lifts the nipple to a natural position.

Because the breast is also lifted, the result is both smaller and firmer.

Who is it for?

It suits women whose breast size causes physical symptoms or limits daily life. Patients are best at a stable weight before surgery.

  • Neck, shoulder or back pain
  • Bra straps leaving grooves in the shoulders
  • Skin irritation or rashes under the breasts
  • Difficulty exercising or finding clothes that fit

How the procedure is done

Your surgeon examines you in person and agrees the target size with you. Most reductions use an anchor-shaped or vertical incision, around the areola and down to the breast fold.

Excess tissue is removed, the breast is reshaped and the nipple is moved upwards while keeping its blood supply. Small drains may be used for a day. Your hotel, VIP transfers and a medical interpreter are arranged before you land in Istanbul, and a personal coordinator stays with you throughout.

Recovery and results

Many patients notice relief from the weight straight away. You wear a support bra for about 6 weeks, and soreness usually eases within the first week.

Desk work is usually possible after 2 to 3 weeks, and full exercise after 6 weeks. Swelling settles over a few months, and scars soften and fade over a year.

Your final check-up in Istanbul confirms that the wounds are healing well before you fly. After you return home, your coordinator keeps in touch and you can send photos for review at any time during the first year.

Planning your new size

Choosing the new size is a shared decision between you and your surgeon. The aim is breasts in proportion to your shoulders, waist and hips, with a natural shape and a healthy blood supply to the nipple.

During the consultation your surgeon measures your chest, asks about your symptoms and the bra size you hope for, and explains how much tissue is likely to be removed. Very large reductions may need a different technique, which will be discussed openly.

Liposuction of the side chest or armpit area is sometimes added to refine the outline. Before surgery you will usually need blood tests, and depending on your age and history a breast ultrasound or mammogram may be requested.

Your package includes pre-operative tests, one night in hospital, medication, a special bra, six hotel nights with breakfast, VIP transfers, a final check-up and one year of WhatsApp follow-up.

Risks and safety

Risks include bleeding, infection, slow healing where scars meet, reduced or altered nipple sensation, asymmetry and visible scars. Breastfeeding may not be possible afterwards.

A doctor assesses your suitability in person, reviews your medical history and tests, and explains how these risks apply to you before surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Will breast reduction relieve my back pain?

Many patients report less neck, shoulder and back pain after reduction, especially when the pain is caused by breast weight. Your doctor will assess whether other causes may be involved.

How small can my breasts be made?

The new size is agreed with your surgeon based on your frame and the blood supply to the nipple. Most patients choose a size in proportion to their body rather than the smallest possible.

Can I breastfeed after breast reduction?

Some women can, but breastfeeding may be reduced or not possible because milk ducts are affected. If this matters to you, discuss it before surgery.

Is breast reduction combined with a lift?

Yes, the breast is lifted as part of every reduction, so a separate lift is not needed.
