Short answer
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root, topped with a fixed crown or bridge. Treatment usually takes two visits to Istanbul: about 3 to 5 days for placement, then 5 to 7 days for the final teeth 3 to 6 months later. Most patients return to normal routines within 2 to 3 days.
What are dental implants?
A dental implant has three parts: a titanium post that sits in the jawbone, a connector called an abutment, and the visible crown or bridge. Over a few months the bone grows around the post, a process called osseointegration, and holds it firmly.
Implants can replace one tooth, several teeth or a full arch. They do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, so healthy teeth do not need to be filed down.
Who is it for?
Implants suit adults with one or more missing teeth and enough healthy jawbone, or who can have bone grafting. A dentist reviews your 3D scan and medical history in person.
- One or more missing teeth
- Loose or uncomfortable dentures
- Teeth that cannot be saved
- Non-smokers or those willing to stop around surgery
- Good general health with controlled conditions such as diabetes
How the procedure is done
Implant treatment usually takes two visits. On the first visit, about 3 to 5 days, you have an examination, a panoramic X-ray or 3D tomography and treatment planning. The implants are placed under local anaesthesia, and a temporary tooth can often be fitted for appearance.
After 3 to 6 months of healing at home, you return for 5 to 7 days. The dentist checks the implants, takes scans and fits your custom crowns or bridge.
Metropolmed's own dental team carries out your treatment in Istanbul. Our TÜRSAB-licensed travel division (licence 13032) books your hotel, and your hotel, VIP transfer and medical interpreter are arranged before you land. A personal coordinator and 12 months of follow-up are included.
Recovery and results
Swelling and mild discomfort are normal for 2 to 3 days and are usually managed with standard pain relief. Eat soft food for the first week and keep the area clean as advised.
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, the implant itself can last 20 years or more. The crown on top typically lasts 10 to 15 years before it may need replacing.
Between visits, your coordinator checks on your healing and is available if you have questions. Avoid chewing on the implant area until your dentist says it is safe.

Risks and safety
Implant surgery is a routine procedure, but it carries risks. These include swelling, bruising, infection, bleeding, temporary numbness from nerve irritation and, in some cases, an implant that does not bond with the bone and needs replacing. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and gum disease raise the risk.
Some patients need a bone graft or sinus lift first, which can lengthen treatment. A dentist assesses suitability in person using 3D imaging. Metropolmed holds the Turkish Ministry of Health international patient authorisation (USHAŞ AK-0164).

Frequently asked questions
Why do dental implants need two visits?
The jawbone needs 3 to 6 months to bond with the implant before the final teeth go on. Fitting the final crown too early can put the implant at risk.
Is implant placement painful?
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Most people describe the following days as similar to a tooth extraction.
What if I do not have enough bone?
A bone graft or sinus lift can often rebuild the area. Your dentist will see this on the 3D scan and explain the extra steps and timing.
Can I have a temporary tooth between visits?
Yes, in most cases a temporary tooth or bridge is fitted so you do not leave with a gap. Your dentist advises which option is safe for your case.
Can implants be done if I smoke?
Yes, but smoking raises the risk of implant failure. You will be advised to stop for at least a few weeks around surgery.
