As medical tourism has increased in Turkey, the number of visitors seeking treatment has skyrocketed over the last decade. In 2008, the country welcomed around 100,000 patients: by 2021, this figure is expected to reach 1.5 million. The reasons for this surge are clear - lower costs and shorter waiting times, combined with a wide range of facilities. Compared with Europe and the US, Turkish health services offer treatments of comparable quality at much more affordable prices. There are 90% less costs for some surgeries in Turkey than in other countries. The majority of visitors come from Europe, the Gulf States, Russia, and Turkic Republics, with a preference for Istanbul, Antalya, and Ankara as their favorite destinations. Health tourism in Turkey ranks third after the US and South Korea. Up until recently, the target was to host 2 million visitors.
