What is Hair Transplantation?
Hair transplantation is a microsurgical procedure that allows the transfer of healthy hair follicles from a part of the body called ‘donor zone’ to the bald or balding part of the body called ‘recipient zone’ as a result of the examination performed by a specialist doctor. This procedure is usually used in the treatment of baldness in men.
In this minimally invasive procedure, grafts containing healthy hair follicles that are genetically resistant to hair loss (such as the back of the head) are transported to the scalp where baldness is seen.
Hair transplantation can be applied to the recovery of eyelashes, eyebrows, beard and mustache hairs, as well as filling the scars caused by surgeries such as accidents, face lifts or previous hair transplants. Hair transplantation is different from the skin graft; grafts involve almost all of the dermis surrounding the epidermis and hair follicle and are transplanted by several small grafts instead of a single skin strip.
According to the latest statistics published by the International Society of Hair Transplant Surgery, hair transplantation has increased by 60 percent since 2014.
Who can apply hair transplantation?
About 50% of men over the age of 50 experience hair loss problems. Therefore, hair transplantation is the most commonly used cosmetic surgery by men. From this point of view, hair loss should not be considered as a problem experienced only by men. Many women also experience problems such as hair loss or thinning.
Hair loss can occur as a result of genetic heredity, aging, traumatic injuries or various medical conditions.
Regardless of the cause, if there is a sufficient amount of healthy hair follicles in the body, hair transplantation can be performed successfully in all people. Not only the scalp, eyebrow, mustache or beard hair in all areas where this process is easily performed without encountering any problems.
Why does hair loss occur?
Although hair loss is more common in older adults, it can occur at an earlier age, even in children. If a normal individual is considered to have about 100,000 hairs, hair loss of around 50 to 100 hairs per day is considered normal and naturally there is no loss of this diameter.
Hair loss can develop slowly over the years or may occur suddenly. It is almost impossible to count the amount of hair lost in a given day. So if you notice that you lose a lot of hair after washing your hair or emptying the piles of hair on your comb / brush, you may be losing more hair than usual. In this case, it is useful to consult a specialist doctor. Your doctor will try to determine the underlying cause of your hair loss.
The most common cause of hair loss is hereditary male or female type baldness. If your family has a history of baldness, this type of hair loss is likely to occur.
In some cases, hair loss can occur with a simple stop in the hair growth cycle. Certain diseases, surgeries or traumatic events may trigger hair loss.
Hormonal changes can also cause temporary hair loss. For example;
· Discontinuation of birth control pills
Some medical conditions that may cause hair loss can be listed as follows:
· Thyroid disease
· Alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease attacking hair follicles)
· Scalp infections such as ringworm
Scarring diseases such as lichen planus and some types of lupus can cause permanent hair loss.
Hair loss can also be caused by drugs used to treat some diseases:
· Heart problems
A physical or emotional shock can trigger visible hair loss. To give an example of this type of shock;
· Death in the family
· Excessive weight loss
· High fever
A diet devoid of protein, iron and other nutrients can also cause hair to become thinner, causing damage.
How is hair transplantation done?
In hair transplantation process, the most possible grafts are taken from the area designated as a donor area by a specialist doctor. Roots are then placed in a special PRP solution and the channels in which the roots are planted are opened. Finally, the roots are transferred to the opened channels and the process is completed.
It is very important that the person performing the process is competent in this area since these procedures require extremely sensitivity.
What methods are used for hair transplantation?
There are many methods used in hair transplantation. These methods may have different effects, completion times or prices. Each method used in hair transplantation may vary.
Among the hair transplantation methods, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and DHI (Direct Hair Implant) can be considered as the most efficient. FUE and DHI are the methods of hair transplantation for people to regain their lost hair. These two methods have differences, pros and cons. Of course, first of all, it is important to know what FUE and DHI methods are.
